ArtFair circuit

Monday, September 7th, 2009

If you are a photographer, or collect photography, a great place to see new work is at any of the many photo art fairs that happen throughout the year.  My favorite one is ParisPhoto, which happens every November.  They host it in the basement of The Louvre in Paris. This year will be my third visit.

In January 2010, I will be flying to Los Angeles for Photo L.A.  This fair will be hosted at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, CA.

In March, check out AIPAD in NYC.  This is grand daddy of photo fairs in the USA.  This will be my third year attending.  Last year was the first year I actually purchased a piece for our collection.

This is something I have been waiting to see for a long time.  Mark your calendars!

Robert Frank: The Americans
The Metropolitan Museum of Art - NYC
September 22, 2009–December 27, 2009
Galleries for Drawings, Prints and Photographs and The Howard Gilman Galleries

This exhibition will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Americans, Robert Frank’s elegiac suite of black-and-white photographs made on a cross-country road trip as a Guggenheim Fellow in 1955–56. The show will feature all 83 photographs published in the compact volume that became one of the medium’s most influential publications. In addition, the exhibition will include a full set of contact sheets, the artist’s earlier essays in sequencing photographs, and his later reuse of iconic images from the series.
Accompanied by a catalogue.

Viva Mexico!

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Viva Mexico! Edward Weston and His Contemporaries will be the next photo exhibition at the MFA in Boston.  This exhibition will run from May 30 through November 2, 2009.  Here’s a quick blurb from their website:

“Viva Mexico!” draws heavily on the The Lane Collection of photographs on long-term loan at the MFA and features about 35 rare works by Edward Weston taken during the pivotal years of 1923 through 1926. The work covers a wide range of subjects: heroic portrait heads, avant-garde nudes, starkly abstract urban views and landscapes, and images of Mexican toys and folk objects. Also included is a select group of pictures by Weston’s contemporaries–Modotti, Strand, Bravo, and his young son, Brett, who made some of his first serious photographs during his brief visit to Mexico with his father.
